A vulnerability was found in Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam up to 4.3.8.29 (Anti-Spam Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component MIME Handler. Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 build 1 and 2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (bmserver component termination) via malformed MIME messages.
The bug was discovered 09/07/2005. The weakness was published 10/12/2005 with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at securityresponse.symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4695 since 02/01/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74194 (Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam Winmail.DAT Decomposer Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
