A vulnerability was found in Juniper Netscreen ScreenOS up to 2.6.0 (Router Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Connection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. NetScreen ScreenOS before 2.6.1 does not support a maximum number of concurrent sessions for a system, which allows an attacker on the trusted network to cause a denial of service (resource exhaustion) via a port scan to an external network, which consumes all available connections.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2002. The weakness was presented 05/29/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0234. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
