Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris up to 10 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Network Security Services Security Tools. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
zlib 1.2 and later versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted compressed stream with an incomplete code description of a length greater than 1, which leads to a buffer overflow, as demonstrated using a crafted PNG file.
The bug was discovered . The weakness was released 10/14/2005 by Billy Rios with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2096 since 06/30/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12970 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18799 (Slackware 10.0 / 10.1 / current : zlib DoS (SSA:2005-189-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19690 (MySQL Multiple Vulnerabilities).
