Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file index.php of the component PHP. PHP, when installed with Apache and configured to search for index.php as a default web page, allows remote attackers to obtain the full pathname of the server via the HTTP OPTIONS method, which reveals the pathname in the resulting error message.
The weakness was shared 05/29/2002 by Paul as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0240. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
By approaching the search of inurl:index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10492 (Apache 2 OPTIONS Request Path Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
