A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 4.1.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. PHP, when not configured with the "display_errors = Off" setting in php.ini, allows remote attackers to obtain the physical path for an include file via a trailing slash in a request to a directly accessible PHP program, which modifies the base path, causes the include directive to fail, and produces an error message that contains the path.
The weakness was disclosed 05/29/2002 by Paul as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0253. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
