Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Libgcrypt up to 1.9.3. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component ElGamal Encryption. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The ElGamal implementation in Libgcrypt before 1.9.4 allows plaintext recovery because, during interaction between two cryptographic libraries, a certain dangerous combination of the prime defined by the receiver's public key, the generator defined by the receiver's public key, and the sender's ephemeral exponents can lead to a cross-configuration attack against OpenPGP.
The weakness was shared 09/07/2021. The advisory is shared for download at ibm.github.io. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-40528. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
Upgrading to version 1.9.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at dev.gnupg.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
