Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Ethereal 0.9.0/0.9.1/0.9.2/0.9.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown part of the component DNS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
DNS dissector in Ethereal before 0.9.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a malformed packet that causes Ethereal to enter an infinite loop.
The weakness was disclosed 06/18/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ethereal.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0403. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14967 (Debian DSA-130-1 : ethereal - remotely triggered memory allocation error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115025 (Red Hat Ethereal Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 0.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9205), Tenable (14967), SecurityFocus (BID 4807†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6730†). The entries VDB-18250, VDB-18251, VDB-18253 and VDB-18338 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
