A vulnerability was found in Steve Korbett PVote 1.0/1.0a/1.0b/1.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file ch_info.php. PVote before 1.9 allows remote attackers to change the administrative password and gain privileges by directly calling ch_info.php with the newpass and confirm parameters both set to the new password.
The bug was discovered 04/18/2002. The weakness was presented 06/18/2002 by NetWin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0589. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:ch_info.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10615 (PVote Unauthorized Administrative Password Change Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
