A vulnerability has been found in HP OpenView up to 8.0 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Unspecified vulnerability in Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 and 5.0 Update 1 and J2SE 1.4.2 up to 1.4.2_07, as used in multiple products and platforms including (1) HP-UX and (2) APC PowerChute, allows applications to assign permissions to themselves and gain privileges.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2005. The weakness was released 10/20/2005 by Adam Gowdiak (shutdown) with HP (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at itrc.hp.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1974 since 06/14/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at itrc.hp.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
