Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Cobalt Raq 2/4. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Cobalt RAQ 4 allows remote attackers to read password-protected files, and possibly files outside the web root, via a .. (dot dot) in an HTTP request.
The weakness was disclosed 06/25/2002 by Alex Hernandez as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0347. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10982 (Sun Cobalt RaQ Directory Traversal File Reading Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
