The Windows Media Device Manager (WMDM) Service in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 2000 systems allows local users to obtain LocalSystem rights via a program that calls the WMDM service to connect to an invalid local storage device, aka "Privilege Elevation through Windows Media Device Manager Service".

The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2002 with Microsoft as MS02-032 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0373. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
