A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Aprelium Technologies Abyss Web Server up to 1.0.0.1 (Web Server). This affects some unknown functionality of the component URL Encoding Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Aprelium Abyss Web Server (abyssws) before 1.0.0.2 allows remote attackers to read files outside the web root, including the abyss.conf file, via URL-encoded .. (dot dot) sequences in the HTTP request.

The weakness was presented 07/03/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0543. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
