Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.49 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Path Normalization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in a change made to path normalization in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.49. An attacker could use a path traversal attack to map URLs to files outside the directories configured by Alias-like directives. If files outside of these directories are not protected by the usual default configuration "require all denied", these requests can succeed. If CGI scripts are also enabled for these aliased pathes, this could allow for remote code execution. This issue is known to be exploited in the wild. This issue only affects Apache 2.4.49 and not earlier versions. The fix in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.50 was found to be incomplete, see CVE-2021-42013.
The weakness was presented 10/05/2021. The advisory is available at httpd.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-41773 since 09/29/2021. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at twitter.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. This issue was added on 11/03/2021 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 11/17/2021:
Apply updates per vendor instructions.Upgrading to version 2.4.50 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at httpd.apache.org.
