Oracle 9i Application Server stores XSQL and SOAP configuration files insecurely, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information including usernames and passwords by requesting (1) XSQLConfig.xml or (2) soapConfig.xml through a virtual directory.

The weakness was presented 07/03/2002 by David Litchfield as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0568. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

By approaching the search of inurl:XSQLConfig.xml/soapConfig.xml it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10855 (Oracle Application Server XSQLServlet XSQLConfig.xml Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86324 (Oracle Application/Database Server Default Configuration File Information Disclosure Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1871.
