The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0574. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 4.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ip_output of the component ICMP Echo Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory leak in FreeBSD 4.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion) via ICMP echo packets that trigger a bug in ip_output() in which the reference count for a routing table entry is not decremented, which prevents the entry from being removed.
The weakness was shared 04/17/2002 (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0574. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8893), SecurityFocus (BID 4539†), OSVDB (5232†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22761†). The entry VDB-18392 is related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
