Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Nagios XI up to 5.8.5 (Log Management Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component NagVis. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Manage Backgrounds functionality within NagVis versions prior to 1.9.29 is vulnerable to an authenticated path traversal vulnerability. Exploitation of this results in a malicious actor having the ability to arbitrarily delete files on the local system.
The weakness was presented 10/14/2021. The advisory is shared for download at synopsys.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2021-33178 since 05/18/2021. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
