A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Jerrett Taylor Php Imglist 1.2 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file imlist.php. The manipulation of the argument cwd with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in imlist.php for Php Imglist allows remote attackers to read arbitrary code via a .. (dot dot) in the cwd parameter.

The bug was discovered 03/11/2002. The weakness was released 07/26/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0441. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 137 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:imlist.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10515 (PHP ImgList Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
