FreeBSD/NetBSD KAME-derived IPsec missing encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD and NetBSD (Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component KAME-derived IPsec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

KAME-derived implementations of IPsec on NetBSD 1.5.2, FreeBSD 4.5, and other operating systems, does not properly consult the Security Policy Database (SPD), which could cause a Security Gateway (SG) that does not use Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) to forward forged IPv4 packets.

The weakness was published 03/04/2002 by Greg Troxel and Bill Chiarchiaro (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0414. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8416), SecurityFocus (BID 4224†) and OSVDB (5304†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
