A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sun Cobalt Raq 3i. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file MultiFileUploadHandler.php of the component Administration Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. MultiFileUploadHandler.php in the Sun Cobalt RaQ XTR administration interface allows local users to bypass authentication and overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a temporary file, followed by a request to MultiFileUpload.php.
The weakness was released 08/12/2002 by DiGiT with digit-labs.org as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0430. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
