A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Outlook 2002 (Groupware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function player.launchurl of the component Windows Media Player. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. An interaction between Windows Media Player (WMP) and Outlook 2002 allows remote attackers to bypass Outlook security settings and execute Javascript via an IFRAME in an HTML email message that references .WMS (Windows Media Skin) or other WMP media files, whose onload handlers execute the player.LaunchURL() Javascript function.
The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 by Richard M. Smith with ComputerBytesMan (Website). The advisory is shared at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0481. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely.
