It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.
Details
A vulnerability was found in NetBSD up to 1.6 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function ptrace of the component setuid Program. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in CVS 1.11.x up to 1.11.15, and 1.12.x up to 1.12.7, when using the pserver mechanism allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via Entry lines.
The bug was discovered 05/19/2004. The weakness was published 11/02/2005 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0396 since 04/13/2004. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.nl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14147 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : cvs (MDKSA-2004:048)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38273 (CVS Malformed Entry Modified and Unchanged Flag Insertion Heap Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netbsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13614. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2814.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16193), Exploit-DB (300), Tenable (14147), SecurityFocus (BID 10384†) and OSVDB (6305†). Similar entries are available at VDB-666, VDB-1858, VDB-1857 and VDB-1859. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
