OSSP mm Library up to 1.1.x Apache User symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in OSSP mm Library up to 1.1.x. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Apache User Handler. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0658. Moreover, an exploit is present. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OSSP mm Library up to 1.1.x (Software Library). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Apache User Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

OSSP mm library (libmm) before 1.2.0 allows the local Apache user to gain privileges via temporary files, possibly via a symbolic link attack.

The bug was discovered 07/29/2002. The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). The advisory is available at linux-mandrake.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0658. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16807 (HP-UX PHSS_27477 : s700_800 11.04 Virtualvault 4.5 Inside Admin Server Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115014 (Red Hat MM Shared Memory Library Temporary File Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9719), Exploit-DB (21667), Tenable (16807), SecurityFocus (BID 5352†) and OSVDB (5150†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
