getuserdesc.asp in Hosting Controller 2002 allows remote attackers to change the passwords of arbitrary users and gain privileges by modifying the username parameter, as addressed by the "UpdateUser" hot fix.

The bug was discovered 07/13/2002. The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0776. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 30 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:getuserdesc.asp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10764 (Hosting Controller Hidden Field Password Changing Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
