Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 Extended Stored Procedure privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Extended Stored Procedure. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 installs with weak permissions for extended stored procedures that are associated with helper functions, which could allow unprivileged users, and possibly remote attackers, to run stored procedures with administrator privileges via (1) xp_execresultset, (2) xp_printstatements, or (3) xp_displayparamstmt.

The weakness was published 09/05/2002 by David Litchfield with Generation Security Software Ltd. as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0721. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11214 (MS02-061: Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19059 (Multiple MS-SQL-7 threats - (II)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37229), Exploit-DB (21718), Tenable (11214), SecurityFocus (BID 5481†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-900†).
