Internet Explorer 4.0 and later allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a web page that accesses a legacy XML Datasource applet (com.ms.xml.dso.XMLDSO.class) and modifies the base URL to point to the local system, which is trusted by the applet.

The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was shared 09/24/2002 by jelmer as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0976. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
