A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 98/98SE/ME/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function CertGetCertificateChain/CertVerifyCertificateChainPolicy/WinVerifyTrust of the component Crypto API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. The (1) CertGetCertificateChain, (2) CertVerifyCertificateChainPolicy, and (3) WinVerifyTrust APIs within the CryptoAPI for Microsoft products including Microsoft Windows 98 through XP, Office for Mac, Internet Explorer for Mac, and Outlook Express for Mac, do not properly verify the Basic Constraints of intermediate CA-signed X.509 certificates, which allows remote attackers to spoof the certificates of trusted sites via a man-in-the-middle attack for SSL sessions, as originally reported for Internet Explorer and IIS.
The issue has been introduced in 06/25/1998. The weakness was shared 10/04/2002 by Mike as MS02-050 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0862. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1532 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
