Cisco CBOS up to 2.4.4 TCP/IP Stack memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Cisco CBOS. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component TCP/IP Stack. Performing a manipulation results in memory allocation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0886. Furthermore, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco CBOS. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component TCP/IP Stack. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cisco DSL CPE devices running CBOS 2.4.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang or memory consumption) via (1) a large packet to the DHCP port, (2) a large packet to the Telnet port, or (3) a flood of large packets to the CPE, which causes the TCP/IP stack to consume large amounts of memory.

The weakness was published 10/04/2002 by Knud Erik Højgaard (Website). The advisory is shared at cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0886. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2745.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9151), Exploit-DB (21472), SecurityFocus (BID 4813†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-11207†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
