A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in CARE 2002 up to 1.0.01. Affected is the function include of the file cafenews.php. The manipulation of the argument lang with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in cafenews.php for CARE 2002 before beta 1.0.02 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences and null characters in the lang parameter, which is processed by a call to the include function.
The weakness was disclosed 10/04/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0998. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
