A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS up to 12.4T (Router Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component IPsec IKEv1 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the Internet Key Exchange version 1 (IKEv1) implementation in multiple Cisco products allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device reset) via certain malformed IKE packets, as demonstrated by the PROTOS ISAKMP Test Suite for IKEv1. NOTE: due to the lack of details in the Cisco advisory, it is unclear which of CVE-2005-3666, CVE-2005-3667, and/or CVE-2005-3668 this issue applies to.
The bug was discovered 03/08/2006. The weakness was published 11/14/2005 by Cisco with Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3669 since 11/18/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
