A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.26/2.0.42 (Web Server). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Error Page. The manipulation of the argument Host with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the default error page of Apache 2.0 before 2.0.43, and 1.3.x up to 1.3.26, when UseCanonicalName is "Off" and support for wildcard DNS is present, allows remote attackers to execute script as other web page visitors via the Host: header, a different vulnerability than CAN-2002-1157.
The bug was discovered 01/01/2001. The weakness was released 10/02/2002 by mattmurphy as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0840. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. Upgrading to version 1.3.27 or 2.0.43 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10990. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5043.
