Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in nanoid up to 3.1.30. This issue affects the function valueOf of the component ID Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The package nanoid from 3.0.0 and before 3.1.31 are vulnerable to Information Exposure via the valueOf() function which allows to reproduce the last id generated.
The weakness was released 01/15/2022. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-23566 since 01/08/2021. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213394 (Debian dla-4003 : node-postcss - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 3.1.31 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2b7bd9332bc49b6330c7ddb08e5c661833db2575 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
