Details
A vulnerability has been found in HP Secure OS 1.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function system of the component dvips Converter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
dvips converter for Postscript files in the tetex package calls the system() function insecurely, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via certain print jobs, possibly involving fonts.
The bug was discovered 10/08/2002. The weakness was shared 10/28/2002 by Olaf Kirch with SuSE as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0836. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13971 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kdegraphics (MDKSA-2002:071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105081 (Red Hat DVIPS Arbitrary Command Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10365), Tenable (13971), SecurityFocus (BID 5978†), OSVDB (4526†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-6974†). The entry VDB-19110 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
