Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in NetBSD 1.5/1.5.1/1.5.2/1.5.3/1.6 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component IPsec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
IPSEC implementations including (1) FreeS/WAN and (2) KAME do not properly calculate the length of authentication data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via spoofed, short Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) packets, which result in integer signedness errors.
The weakness was shared 11/04/2002 by Todd Sabin with BindView as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0666. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15038 (Debian DSA-201-1 : freeswan - denial of service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
