ypserv up to 2.5 Map Request yp_db.c ypdb_open memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ypserv up to 2.5. This issue affects the function ypdb_open of the file yp_db.c of the component Map Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Memory leak in ypdb_open in yp_db.c for ypserv before 2.5 in the NIS package 3.9 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of requests for a map that does not exist.

The bug was discovered 08/10/2002. The weakness was disclosed 11/04/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ftp.caldera.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1232. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13976 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : ypserv (MDKSA-2002:078)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 590.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10423), Tenable (13976), SecurityFocus (BID 6016†), OSVDB (14513†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-15075†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
