A vulnerability was found in IPsec-Tools up to 0.6.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IKEv1 Packet Handler. The Internet Key Exchange version 1 (IKEv1) implementation (isakmp_agg.c) in racoon in ipsec-tools before 0.6.3, when running in aggressive mode, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (null dereference and crash) via crafted IKE packets, as demonstrated by the PROTOS ISAKMP Test Suite for IKEv1.
The bug was discovered . The weakness was presented 11/14/2005 with Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3732 since 11/21/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13101 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20763 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 / 5.10 : ipsec-tools vulnerability (USN-221-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117726 (CentOS Security Update for ipsec (CESA-2006:0267)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
