Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Java Virtual Machine 1.1 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Microsoft Java implementation, as used in Internet Explorer, allows remote attackers to steal cookies and execute script in a different security context via a URL that contains a colon in the domain portion, which is not properly parsed and loads an applet from a malicious site within the security context of the site that is being visited by the user.
The weakness was disclosed 11/29/2002 by Jouko Pynnonen as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1286. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10579), SecurityFocus (BID 6142†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-2536†). The entries VDB-19176, VDB-19175, VDB-19174 and VDB-19173 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
