RealNetworks Helix Universal Server 9.0.2.768 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks Helix Universal Server 9.0.2.768 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in RealNetworks Helix Universal Server 9.0 (9.0.2.768) allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long Transport field in a SETUP RSTP request, (2) a DESCRIBE RSTP request with a long URL argument, or (3) two simultaneous HTTP GET requests with long arguments.

The bug was discovered 11/30/2002. The weakness was shared 12/20/2002 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1643 since 03/28/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Johnny Cyberpunk and been published 5 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38184 (RealNetworks RealServer Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12421. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2334.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10915), Exploit-DB (23), SecurityFocus (BID 6458†), OSVDB (4579†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-5390†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
