A vulnerability has been found in Mike Spice Mikes Vote CGI up to 1.2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file vote.cgi. The manipulation of the argument type with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in vote.cgi for Mike Spice Mike s Vote CGI before 1.3 allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences in the type parameter.

The bug was discovered 01/16/2002. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 by Mike as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1628 since 03/26/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
