A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server 1.3.26/1.3.27 (Web Server). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component htdigest. The manipulation of the argument user with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in htdigest in Apache 1.3.26 and 1.3.27 may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long user argument. NOTE: since htdigest is normally only locally accessible and not setuid or setgid, there are few attack vectors which would lead to an escalation of privileges, unless htdigest is executed from a CGI program. Therefore this may not be a vulnerability.

The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
