A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Jelsoft vBulletin up to 2.2.4 (Forum Software). This affects an unknown part of the file memberlist.php. The manipulation of the argument $letterbits with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in memberlist.php in Jelsoft vBulletin 2.0 rc 2 through 2.2.4 allows remote attackers to steal authentication credentials by injecting script into $letterbits.
The bug was discovered 03/22/2002. The weakness was presented 12/31/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1678 since 06/21/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 284 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:memberlist.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10547 (VBulletin Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
