Details
A vulnerability was found in Netmaker up to 0.8.4/0.9.3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hard-coded key vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-321. The use of a hard-coded cryptographic key significantly increases the possibility that encrypted data may be recovered. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Netmaker is a platform for creating and managing virtual overlay networks using WireGuard. Prior to versions 0.8.5, 0.9.4, and 010.0, there is a hard-coded cryptographic key in the code base which can be exploited to run admin commands on a remote server if the exploiter know the address and username of the admin. This effects the server (netmaker) component, and not clients. This has been patched in Netmaker v0.8.5, v0.9.4, and v0.10.0. There are currently no known workarounds.
The weakness was shared 02/19/2022 as GHSA-86f3-hf24-76q4. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-23650 since 01/19/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
Upgrading to version 0.8.5, 0.9.4 or 0.10.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d4f44ecfe8be4ca38920556ba3b90502ffb4fee is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
