Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component TCP Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft Windows 2000 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by sending a flood of empty TCP/IP packets with the ACK and FIN bits set to the NetBIOS port (TCP/139), as demonstrated by stream3.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was published 12/31/2002 by 3APA3A with Microsoft (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at online.securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1712 since 06/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1048 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling .
