Sendmail 8.9.0 through 8.12.3 allows local users to cause a denial of service by obtaining an exclusive lock on the (1) alias, (2) map, (3) statistics, and (4) pid files.
The issue has been introduced in 05/19/1998. The weakness was published 05/23/2002 by dynamo (Website). The advisory is available at sendmail.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1827 since 06/29/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1465 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74108 (Sendmail File Locking Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 8.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
