A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft IIS 5.0/5.1 (Web Server). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument Host with the input value / leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. Microsoft IIS 5.0 and 5.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via an HTTP request with a Host header that contains a large number of "/" (forward slash) characters.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was published 12/31/2002 by Dave Aitel with Immunity (Website). The advisory is available at securiteam.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1908 since 06/29/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1048 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
