A vulnerability was found in Jelsoft vBulletin up to 2.2.8 (Forum Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file global.php. The manipulation of the argument $scriptpath/$url with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in global.php in Jelsoft vBulletin 2.0.0 through 2.2.8 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) $scriptpath or (2) $url variables.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2002. The weakness was shared 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1922 since 06/29/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:global.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10851 (Multiple VBulletin Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
