A vulnerability was found in Virgil CGI Scanner up to 0.9 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file virgil.cgi. The manipulation of the argument tar/zielport with the input value -le/bin/sh leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. Virgil CGI Scanner 0.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via the (1) tar (TARGET) or (2) zielport (ZIELPORT) parameters.
The weakness was published 10/22/2002 by Joschka Fischer and Kalif Research Group with KALIF Research Group as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1938 since 06/29/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling Web Server Port. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding .htaccess as an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
