A vulnerability was found in phpRank 1.8. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file add.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpRank 1.8 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) the email parameter of add.php or (2) the banner URL (banurl parameter) in the main list.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2002. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1950 since 06/29/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 82 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:add.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10843 (PHPRank Banner Script Code Injection Vulnerability).
