The bug was discovered 08/11/2005. The weakness was published 01/10/2006 by Angelo Rosiello with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0780 since 08/17/2004. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38512 (Sun Solaris UUSTAT Local Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
