Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in VMware Spring Boot up to 2.5.11/2.6.5. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A Spring MVC or Spring WebFlux application running on JDK 9+ may be vulnerable to remote code execution (RCE) via data binding. The specific exploit requires the application to run on Tomcat as a WAR deployment. If the application is deployed as a Spring Boot executable jar, i.e. the default, it is not vulnerable to the exploit. However, the nature of the vulnerability is more general, and there may be other ways to exploit it.Spring Boot and Spring Framework are affected by this issue which requires JDK9 or higher, Apache Tomcat as the Servlet container, the package as traditional WAR, and spring-webmvc or spring-webflux dependency.
The weakness was released 03/30/2022 as SpringShell: Spring Core RCE 0-day Vulnerability. The advisory is shared for download at cyberkendra.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-22965. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/23/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 253555 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-22965), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. This issue was added on 04/04/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 04/25/2022:
