Details
A vulnerability has been found in Working Resources Inc. Badblue Personal 1.7.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CHttpServer::OnParseError of the file isapi.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in CHttpServer::OnParseError in the ISAPI extension (Isapi.cpp) when built using Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) static libraries in Visual C++ 5.0, and 6.0 before SP3, as used in multiple products including BadBlue, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (access violation and crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long query string that causes a parsing error.
The bug was discovered 07/09/2002. The weakness was published 12/31/2002 by Matthew Murphy (mattmurphy) as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1973 since 06/29/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 175 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86360 (Working Resources BadBlue ISAPI Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9529), Exploit-DB (21601), SecurityFocus (BID 5188†), OSVDB (60020†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-10500†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
